We are thrilled to announce that four TerraLex member firms have recently been named Mansfield Certified. Titled after Arabella Mansfield, the first woman admitted to the practice of law in the United States, the Mansfield Rule measures whether law firms have affirmatively considered women and attorneys of color — at least 30 percent of the candidate pool — for leadership and governance roles, equity partner promotions, and lateral positions.
Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney, Holland & Hart, Nixon Peabody, and Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton LLP partnered with Diversity Lab to pilot the Mansfield Rule in 2017 and were among the 41 law firms to successfully complete the process and meet the necessary requirements for certification.
“Participating in this pilot program helped our firm further strengthen our long-standing commitment to diversity and inclusion in a variety of ways,” said Liz Sharrer, firm chair of Holland & Hart. “In particular, it helped us establish a more defined set of meaningful metrics against which to measure our advancement of diverse attorneys. We have long appreciated the equity and business imperative of diversifying both our workforce and our leadership, and we appreciate the role that these metrics will play in helping us fulfill this objective going forward. We look forward to continuing to move the needle on diversity and inclusion at the firm through our participation in Mansfield 2.0,” added Sharrer.
Nixon Peabody’s director of diversity and inclusion, Rekha Chiruvolu, also celebrated the “Certification Plus” honor. “For the last several years, we have been making a concerted effort to increase the diversity in our leadership and partnership ranks through innovative programs and initiatives. By weaving diversity and inclusion into all core functions throughout the firm, we ensured that it became part of the culture and a firm wide priority.”
In addition to the Mansfield Certification, Sheppard Mullin has been recognized as a leading law firm for diversity in TheAmerican Lawyer magazine’s “Diversity Scorecard,” Law360’s “Best Law Firms for Minority Attorneys” list, and Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s “Corporate Equality Index,” among others.
Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney has a direct connection to the Rooney Rule through its named partner Art Rooney II. “We are delighted to have achieved Mansfield Rule Certification Plus status and to be blazing trails with this important effort to increase diversity and inclusion in the legal industry,” said Heather Brock, Buchanan’s Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer. “We are a steadfast supporter of this program and have already signed on to pilot Mansfield Rule 2.0, which will further expand the program to include LGBTQ+ lawyers.”
